Training

PerƒEval actively trains students (through university and research courses) and practitioners (through continuing education).  At the national level, many training opportunities are offered at Laval University in Quebec City. Over the last few years, PerƒEval members have offered training courses overseas, including some courses in developing countries.  PerƒEval offers thematic training courses adapted to the specific needs of any particular public organization.

UNIVERSITY COURSES

 

Laval University – Policy Evaluation (POL-7013) (Offered in French) 
This course is offered to students pursuing a Master’s degree or PhD in Political Science, a Master’s degree in Public Affairs, a Master’s degree in International Studies or a Master’s degree in Community Health at Laval University.  This course will present the different theoretical and methodological approaches to evaluation and, with the help of concrete examples, will allow students to familiarize themselves with the evaluation process.

 

Laval University – Policy and evidence (POL-7061) (Offered in French) 
This course is offered to students pursuing a Master's degree in Public Affairs at Laval University. This course will provide students with tools and methods for identifying, analyzing and using scientific knowledge in support to decision-making in public affairs.

 

The Institute of Political Studies of Toulouse – Evaluation of Public Policy: A New Governmental Instrument (Offered in French)
This course is offered at the Institute of Political Studies of Toulouse (France) and is part of the framework of the Master II Council, Expertise and Public Policy. This course will present the different theoretical and methodological approaches to evaluation and, with the help of concrete examples, will allow students to familiarize themselves with the evaluation process.

 

Laval University – Ethics and Public Administration (POL-7012) (Offered in French) 
This course is for students pursuing a Master’s degree or PhD in Political Science, a Master’s degree in Public Affairs or a Diploma of Advanced Studies in Applied Ethics at Laval University.  The course presents, in a national and international perspective, the mechanisms that surround ethics in public administration.  It will help students to understand the role and influence of several major institutions in this area and will also focus on the behaviour of civil servants.  The analytical focus will favour the institutional approach founded on real-world applications.

CONTINUING EDUCATION

Senghor University – Elaboration and Evaluation of Public Policy (French only) 
The training offered at Senghor University of Alexandria (Egypt) equips future African public service managers and executives with specific skills for evaluation and public policy management.  With the help of concrete examples, the course will familiarize participants with models, operational principles and processes of elaboration, implementation, management and evaluation of public policies.  Coursework involves the use of presentations, exposés, practical exercises and coaching.


Canadian Evaluation Society - Essential Skills in Program Evaluation (Upon request)
This training program was developed by the Canadian Evaluation Society to improve the knowledge and basic skills of managers and practitioners in the field of program evaluation. This program is open to all persons newly involved in the field of program evaluation who want to make a judgment on programs or some of their components.
Objectives:
- Increase knowledge about concepts relevant to program evaluation
- Apply this knowledge in the practice of program evaluation
- Define the role of program evaluation in the whole planning and development of a program 
This training is organized by the CLIPP


La Société québécoise d'évaluation de programmes - Policy Analysis for Evaluators (Upon request)
This training aims to introduce evaluators to the main concepts of policy analysis that will allow them to take a fresh look at programs they evaluate, as well as the constraints and limitations of this approach. Particular attention will be paid to the program cycle, the actors and to the resources these actors mobilize in the political and evaluative process. Differences and overlaps between policy analysis and program evaluation will be explained. Practical examples, including conducted policy analysis, will illustrate the concepts presented and practical exercises will allow participants to integrate the theory presented. The pedagogical approach will consist of lectures and practical exercises performed individually or in groups. The exercises allow participants to apply the concepts to their professional reality.

RESEARCH TRAINING

The PerƒEval Research Laboratory places a central focus on research training for students in both undergraduate and graduate studies.  Its philosophy is: “Research Training through Research”. To find out more
